  • Research worker at the Sociological Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA) (1986-1990)
  • Member of FIDESZ party (1988-). Participant in the Opposition Round Table talks; member of the National Election Committee (1989). Member of the Hungarian Parliament (1990-2009). FIDESZ election campaign director (1990, 1994, 1998). Deputy leader of the FIDESZ group in Parliament (1990-1992). Chair of the National Steering Committee of FIDESZ (1992-1993). Vice-President of FIDESZ (1995-1997, 1999-2000). Vice-President of the Hungarian Parliament (1997-1998, 2006-2009). President of the Hungarian Parliament (1998-2002).
