  • Graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, Semmelweis University of Medicine, Budapest (1972). Diploma in psychotherapy from the European Association for Psychotherapy (2004).
  • Practising psychiatrist (1972-1978). Associate professor at the National Medical Rehabilitation Institute, involved in the early development of social-policy education programmes (1978-1989). Associate professor at the Social Policy and Social Work Department of the Institute for Sociology, ELTE University, Budapest (1989-1994). Director of Partners Hungary, a member of an international network of organisations involved in teaching creative conflict management and the techniques of democracy, negotiation and change management (1994-2002). Lecturer in the social psychology of prejudice at the Human Rights Department of the Central European University, Budapest (1998-2003).
  • Parliamentary under-secretary, Ministry of Health, Social and Family Affairs (2002-2004). Minister for Equal Opportunities (June-October 2004). Minister of Youth, Family and Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities (2004-2006). First female Minister of Foreign Affairs (2006-2009).
