Det europæiske borgerinitiativ er fra den 1. april 2012 en realitet. Borgerinitiativet giver én million EU-borgere ret til at bede Europa-Kommissionen om at fremsætte bestemte lovforslag. Europa-Parlamentets formand Martin Schulz betegner borgerinitiativet som "en vidunderlig ting".
"Jeg kender til tilfælde, hvor underskrifter og initiativer ændrede hele den politiske retning", sagde Schulz i forbindelse med præsentationen af borgerinitiativet på en pressekonference den 28. marts.
