This morning, I would like to express my deep sorrow following the attack last night in Nice. On behalf of the European Parliament, I would like to extend my condolences to the families and friends of the many victims. I send my wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured. Slovak Presidency priorities discussed in committee

The EU must come together and deliver tangible results, with clear benefits for its citizens, to regain their confidence and fight growing populism and nationalism across the continent, agreed Slovak Prime Minister Róbert Fico and most MEPs in Wednesday morning’s debate on the priorities of the incoming Slovak Presidency in the EU Council of Ministers. Jobs, social rights and security must top the 2017 EU agenda, say MEPs

Parliament set out its recommendations for the European Commission's 2017 Work Programme in a non-legislative resolution voted on Wednesday. Before the vote, MEPs debated EU priorities with Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans. The need to reflect on what direction the EU should take in the aftermath of the UK’s EU membership referendum was the leitmotiv of this debate. EU-lederne bør gøre mere for at forsvare EU-projektet og gøre det mere gennemsigtigt, socialt og lydhør over for borgernes bekymringer som reaktion på Storbritanniens beslutning om at forlade EU. Dette var det centrale budskab under plenardebatten tirsdag formiddag med Rådsformand Donald Tusk og Kommissionsformand Jean-Claude Juncker oven på sidste uges EU-topmøde. Praise for Dutch Presidency efficiency

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and his team were praised by a majority of political group speakers on Tuesday for the efficient way in which the Netherlands has managed the Council Presidency over the past half year. The highlights that they mentioned included the EU-Turkey deal on migration, the agreement on a European Coast and Border Guard agency, anti-tax avoidance measures and the fourth railway package. Opening: minute’s silence tribute to Michel Rocard and to terror victims

President Schulz opened the session by calling a minute’s silence to pay tribute to former French Prime Minister and MEP Michel Rocard, who died on 2 July aged 85. He also dedicated this silence to the memory of more than 300 people killed and over 500 injured in the previous week’s terrorist attacks in Turkey, Yemen, Bangladesh and Iraq. UK referendum: European Parliament debate on outcome and consequences  

Ved åbningen af den ekstraordinære samling bemærkede Europa-Parlamentets formand Martin Schulz (S&D, DE), at det var første gang, at en plenarsamling er blevet indkaldt med så kort varsel, men han påpegede også, at det britiske folks beslutning om at forlade EU også er uden fortilfælde. Han hilste Lord Hill varmt velkommen og takkede ham for hans arbejde i EU-Kommissionen samt hans beslutning om at træde tilbage efter at have ført kampagne for Storbritanniens forbliven i EU. MEPs opfordrer til hurtigt Brexit for at stoppe usikkerheden samt EU-reformer

Storbritannien må respektere ønsket fra et flertal af de britiske borgere helt, fuldt og så hurtigt som muligt ved officielt at trække sig fra EU før et ny relation kan etableres, siger Europa-Parlamentet i en resolution vedtaget efter debatten på den ekstraordinære plenarforsamling tirsdag. MEPerne understreger samtidig det presserende behov for reformer for at sikre, at EU lever op til borgernes forventninger.
