The Industry, Research and Energy Committee will hold a hearing on the competiveness of SMEs in the EU. The debate will focus on how to reinforce the competitiveness of SMEs through COSME (EU programme for the competitiveness of enterprises and SMEs), how to reduce the administrative burden and how to help SMEs to seize global opportunities. Representatives of employers' organisations, of Chambers of Commerce and other business stakeholders are among the participants. The meeting will be chaired by Amalia SARTORI (EPP, IT)
The Transport and Tourism Committee will hold a hearing on the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) guidelines proposal tabled in October 2011. MEPs will address the methodology, implications and conditions applying to TEN-T project funding beyond 2013.
The Transport and Tourism Committee will hold a hearing with experts and the Commission on the "airports package" proposal. They will discuss future rules for operational restrictions based on noise, further opening of the market for ground-handling and services and the allocation of landing and take-off slots to increase efficiency and ensure best usage of limited capacities in the EU's main airports.
This week two important events on WTO are organized by INTA: 25th session of the Steering Committee of the Parliamentary Conference on the WTO and a public workshop. Steering committee will prepare for the plenary session of the Parliamentary Conference on the WTO to be held in Geneva on 15-16 November and adopt a draft declaration on the recent developments at the WTO. Public workshop will focus on the future of the WTO and International Trading System.
To mark the 50th anniversary of the Association of European Journalists (AEJ), a seminar on media freedom in the EU Member States (including Croatia) is being held on 8 May by Parliament's DG Communication in conjunction with the AEJ.
The event will be opened by EP Vice-President for Communication Anni Podimata and AEJ President Eileen Dunne. A keynote speech will be given by Neelie Kroes, Commissioner responsible for the Digital Agenda for Europe. A panel discussion will follow on how the EU institutions could work with the Council of Europe, the OSCE and NGOs on the subject of media freedom. Speakers: Doris Pack (EPP), Chair of EP Culture Committee, Renate Weber (ALDE), EP rapporteur on Media Freedom, and journalists William Horsley (AEJ) and Jean-Paul Marthoz (Committee to Protect Journalists).
