National MPs from across Europe will join MEPs in Brussels next week to debate the EU’s economic future, EU tax policy, digitalisation, and the future of work.
EP President Tajani, Bulgaria’s National Assembly President Karayancheva, Commissioners Dombrovskis and Oettinger and new Eurogroup President Mário Centeno will be among the speakers.
On Monday 19 February, the discussion will be focused on the priorities of the 2018 European Semester, EU taxation, inequalities in member states and the reform of the EU’s own resources.
On Tuesday 20 February, MPs and MEPs will discuss how to strengthen and deepen the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), the creation of the European Monetary Fund (EMF) and the next EU long-term budget post-2020 (MFF).
The events are part of the 2018 edition of the European Parliamentary Week (#EPW18).

Monday 19 February
The European Semester Conference will focus on 2018 policy priorities: investment, reforms and making responsible government decisions on tax and expenditure, with the emphasis on social fairness and inclusive growth. Speakers include Marianne Thyssen, Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, Skills and Labour Mobility, Domagoj Ivan Milošević, Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs of the Croatian Parliament and Fabienne Keller, Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Finance of the French Senate. The session will be co-chaired by Roberto Gualtieri, Chair of the EP Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and Evgeniya Angelova, Deputy Chair of the Finance and Budgetary Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria.
Later in the afternoon, inter-parliamentary committee meetings will be held in parallel by the:
- Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (on the Future of EU Tax Policy: Taxation of the Digital Economy, follow-up to Panama Papers & Paradise Papers, and the work of the EP PANA Inquiry Committee, Banking Union: managing the balance between risk sharing and risk reduction),
- Employment and Social Affairs Committee (on Digitalisation and the future of work, Inequalities in Member States), and the
- Budget Committee (on the post-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) - addressing emerging challenges and new priorities, and the financing Reform of the European Union’s system of own resources).
Tuesday 20 February
EP President Antonio Tajani will co-chair a morning session devoted to making the EMU more stable and more resilient with Tsveta Karayancheva, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria. Valdis Dombrovskis, Vice-President of the
European Commission for the Euro and Social Dialogue will give the opening address.
In the afternoon, Mário Centeno, President of the Eurogroup, will give a key address and the plenary session will be concluded by a debate on the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). This session will be co-chaired by Jean Arthuis, Chair of the Budget Committee of the European Parliament and Menda Stoyanova, Chair of the Finance and Budgetary Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria.
