The EU should use all its programmes, policies and agreements to combat caste-based discrimination in third countries, says a draft resolution to be debated Wednesday and put to a vote Thursday. Worldwide, about 260 million people from groups defined by descent and occupation suffer poverty, segregation and abuse due to discrimination, it notes.
MEPs will discuss with the Commission how EU development programmes in countries such as India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Yemen and Mauritania can be made to combat caste-based discrimination on a par with other kinds of discrimination, and ensure that EU aid reaches marginalised groups.
Procedure: Oral question to Commission (with resolution)
Debate: Wednesday, 9 October
Vote: Thursday, 10 October
