Debate on first “State of the Energy Union" report

The first annual "State of the Energy Union" report, presented by the European Commission on 18 November, will be debated in plenary on Tuesday morning, with Commission Vice-President for the Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič.

MEPs will take the opportunity to assess progress made to date and are likely to quiz the Commission on energy security in the context of the doubling of Nord Stream capacity.

The report highlights "progress made" in 2015 and the "way forward" in 2016, with regard to:

  • “decarbonising” the economy,
  • energy efficiency,
  • progress towards a fully-integrated internal energy market,
  • energy security, solidarity and trust,
  • an energy union for research, innovation and competitiveness, and
  • the implementation of the Energy Union
