May 17 is the International day against homophobia, an area in which the European Parliament is very active. This year's theme is "fighting homophobia and transphobia in and through education". Following a wave of suicides by young students who were bullied at school because of their sexuality, American journalist Dan Savage created with his partner in 2010 a YouTube video aimed at inspiring hope in young people facing harassment. Since then thousands of people have posted similar videos. And this year parliament's intergroup on the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people has produced a video in which MEPs and commissioners get together to pass on the message that things will "get better".
