How to reform the euro zone will be discussed by the economic committee this week while the civil liberties committee will vote on a proposal to reinforce the rights of detained asylum seekers. The culture committee votes on a resolution on how to protect children better on the internet while the environment committee will express an opinion on offshore oil and gas drilling. Economic issues
The economic committee will consider on Wednesday the European Central Bank's annual report for 2011 and meet the chairs of the European financial supervisory authorities. On Thursday the committee will discuss a draft resolution on the future of the economic and monetary union.
Important committee votes
The civil liberties committee will on Wednesday vote on a directive that reinforces the rights of detained asylum seekers such as free legal assistance, access to labour markets and respect for the needs of vulnerable people. It will also be voting on a regulation setting out that the country through which an asylum seeker has first entered the EU is responsible for examining an application. MEPs reached an agreement with the Council to introduce a reference to solidarity with member states under pressure and an obligation to protect asylum seekers' fundamental rights.
Also on Wednesday, the culture committee will vote on a resolution on protecting children in the digital world, calling for combating illegal and harmful content, protecting privacy and developing strategies to promote access to and education on media and new media.
The environment committee will on the same day comment on a report on offshore oil and gas exploration. Its members are expected to call for financial guarantees to be in place to cover the costs of a clean-up if accidents occur.
Public Hearings
The special committee on organised crime will hold a hearing on cybercrime with a focus on match fixing and other forms of corruption in sports on Monday and Tuesday.
The constitutional affairs committee will hold a hearing on Tuesday on how to promote citizens' direct participation in political life. The topics to be discussed include participative democracy, direct democracy in Europe and what can be done at EU level.
