Less than a year before the 2019 European elections, young Europeans will meet to exchange ideas and set their priorities for Europe's future during the EYE event. They will participate in workshops, debates and lots of activities with European decision-makers in Strasbourg. In July, a report featuring the most concrete ideas discussed during the event will be distributed to all MEPs.

This year's European Youth Event will focus on five themes:

  • Rich and poor: calling for a fair share
  • Safe and dangerous: staying alive in turbulent time
  • Apart and together: working towards a stronger Europe
  • Young and old: keeping up with the digital revolution
  • Local and global: protecting our planet

Among the confirmed guest speakers are former French President Valery Giscard d'Estaing; Sakharov laureates Aji Bashar and Denis Mukwege; European commissioner responsible for social affairs Marianne Thyssen; and former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis.

In a letter to participants, Parliament President Antonio Tajani wrote: “Europe needs fresh ideas now more than ever. The European elections take place in May 2019 against a backdrop of renewed economic growth, yet youth unemployment remains stubbornly high. Only with real engagement by Europe’s citizens, but especially by young people who we believe so much in, can the EU surmount the challenges of the changing economy, migration and climate change.”
