As the European Year for Development, 2015 has been dedicated to highlighting the role played by development cooperation. The European Parliament and especially the development committee are vital in promoting the EU's commitment to fighting hunger and eradicating poverty worldwide. "For Parliament it was also an opportunity to engage citizens in the work of the EU institutions in development policy," said development committee chair Linda McAvan, a UK member of the S&D group.

Events and activities

The European Year for Development was officially launched in Riga, Latvia, on 9 January. Every month had a theme: from "Europe in the World" in January to "Human Rights" in December. For our guest photographer contest we asked people to take pictures inspired by these themes.  The winners were invited to the November plenary in Strasbourg.

MEPs visited the Milan World Expo "Feeding the planet - energy for life" on 18-19 June to promote efforts to boost food security, tackle food waste and encourage healthy lifestyles.

The European Development Days, a high-level forum on development and international cooperation, took place in Brussels on 3-4 June, focussing on global development ahead of key conferences in Addis Abeba, New York and Paris.

An agreement on mobilising resources for development was reached at the United Nations' third International Conference on Financing for Development in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in July. A parliamentary delegation was there led by Linda McAvan, chair of the development committee. She also led the delegation to the UN Sustainable Development Summit in New York on 25-27 September where 150 world leaders adopted 17 sustainable development goals.

Finally, Parliament is present at the ongoing UN Conference for Climate Change in Paris. The delegation is led by Italian EPP member Giovanni La Via, chair of the environment committee. Parliament set out its goals for the conference in an own-initiative report. Read all about the conference and the fight against climate change in our top story and Storify, which will be updated throughout the event.
