Parliament to host youth volunteering convention

The European Parliament is proud to support the European Youth Forum in organising its second Youth Convention on Volunteering, which will take place in Brussels from 7 to 11 September 2011 under the title “Young Volunteers Stand Up!”. Set to attract around 1000 young people from 27 European countries and beyond, the Convention will be the biggest civil-society event during the 2011 European Year of Volunteering.

A press conference will be held on Wednesday 7 September at 3.30 p.m. in the European Parliament press conference room (Anna Politkovskaya, PHSA050) to present the activity-rich programme of the Convention. Speakers will include:


- Mr Gianni Pittella, MEP and Vice-President of the European Parliament

- Ms Katarina Nevedalova, MEP and Vice-President of the European Youth Forum

- Mr Giuseppe Porcaro, Secretary General of the European Youth Forum

- Mr Staffan Nillsson, President of the European Economic and Social Committee

- Mrs Marian Harkin, MEP


Amongst many other events, 80 youth organisations and partners will build a Volunteering Village on the Esplanade of the European Parliament. The official Village opening will take place on 8 September at 6.00 p.m. in presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Mathilde of Belgium and Ms Isabelle Durant, MEP and EP Vice-President.   


The programme will feature a Stakeholder Conference, which will discuss a Charter on the Rights of the Volunteer, interactive debates, workshops and trainings on volunteering. There will also be a free music festival ("YO! Fest"),  featuring Hot Chip DJ Set – Al Doyle, Motel Connection, Ojos de Brujo, La Chiva Gantiva and other bands.
