MEPs will debate the situation in Hungary with Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans late on Tuesday afternoon. The debate follows Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's remarks on the possibility of reinstating capital punishment in Hungary and a public consultation on immigration launched by the Hungarian government. Mr. Orbán will also be present during the debate.
The Civil Liberties Committee held a debate on the possible effects of an EU member state decision to reintroduce the death penalty, including those on its rights and status as a member state, on Thursday 7 May. This debate was prompted by the Conference of Presidents' decision of 30 April to ask the Civil Liberties Committee to examine the issue "as a matter of urgency".
Parliament will vote on a resolution to wrap up the debate in June.
