Hearing on respect for fundamental rights and rule of law

Fundamental rights, democracy and the rule of law in EU will be at the core of a hearing hosted by civil liberties and constitutional affairs' committees on Monday afternoon, at 16:30. Invited guests are senior lawyers from the EU Court of Justice, the European Court of Human Rights and from Belgium, Hungary and Poland.


The hearing is a part of the preparation for a LIBE legislative initiative report, for which Sophie IN'T VELD (ALDE, NL) is the rapporteur and György SCHÖPFLIN (EPP, HU) is AFCO's rapporteur for the opinion.


In recent years, European Parliament has in several occasions dealt with the respect of fundamental rights, democracy and rule of law in EU, most recently on 19 January, when EP debated the respect of rule of law in Poland.

  • Michal BOBEK, Advocate General, Court of Justice of the European Union
  • Angelika NUSSBERGER, Judge, European Court of Human Rights
  • Jean DE CODT, First President, Court of Cassation, Belgium
  • Miklós SZÁNTHÓ, managing director and head analyst of Centre of Fundamental Rights (Alapjogokért Központ), Hungary
  • Dariusz ZAWISTOWSKI, National Council of the Judiciary of Poland, Member of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary

The hearing will take place in the Altiero Spinelli (ASP) building, room 3E2 today between 16.30 and 18.30, and can be followed live via EP Live.
