European Parliament President Martin Schulz announced on Wednesday that he had referred the altercation between UKIP MEPs Steven Woolfe and Mike Hookem to the French authorities, in view of the seriousness of the case and its possible criminal implications.

The Advisory Committee on the Conduct of Members, which recommended handing over the case to the French competent authorities, had received contradictory statements from the two MEPs and concluded that further evidence was needed to clarify the matter. Mr Schulz reserves the right to take a decision on possible sanctions based on the results of the investigation.

Mr Woolfe, who has since left UKIP, was rushed to hospital after collapsing near the Strasbourg chamber on 6 October. He accused Mr Hookem of having punched him in the face outside a UKIP meeting room, an allegation which the latter denied.

Possible sanctions of the European Parliament range from a reprimand to forfeiture of the daily allowance and suspension from participating in parliamentary activities for up to ten days.
