The President of Slovenia, Borut Pahor, called for a convention to meet after next May's European elections to work on ways of strengthening cooperation between member states, in a formal address to Parliament in which he outlined his vision of the future of the European Union, at noon on Tuesday.

Mr Pahor stressed that the Lisbon Treaty would soon be unable to cater for the needs of future citizens and said the financial, economic and social crisis made stronger and closer cooperation at European level essential.

He called on EU heads of state and government to adopt a programme to support young people, who are so badly hit by unemployment.
