The UK production The Selfish Giant by Clio Barnard has been announced as a potential candidate to win the European Parliament LUX Prize, among two other finalists, Miele, by Valeria Golino, a Franco-Italian production and The Broken Circle Breakdown, by Felix van Groeningen – Belgium. The finalists were unveiled on Tuesday 23rd July, at the Venice Days press conference, by the EP Vice President Gianni Pittella (S&D, Italy) and MEP Silvia Costa (S&D, Italy).

The British film which stands a true chance of winning the increasingly important prize backing European film production is a loose and modern adaptation of Oscar Wilde's tale, however stripped of fantasy and immersed in today's social and economic context, with all its uncertainties and intrigues.

The contemporary fable features two teenagers, Arbor and Swifty who, after being marginalized by society, meet Kitten, a local scrap dealer, and begin collecting scrap metal for him using a horse and cart. To this end, the teenagers seem to complement each other, with Swifty on the one hand having a natural talent in dealing with horses, while Arbor is shrewd and has a way with words. But when Arbor begins to emulate Kitten by becoming greedy and exploitative, tensions build, leading to a tragic event which transforms them all irrevocably.

The LUX Prize's purpose is to shed light on social on political issues modern society is facing while at the same time illustrating the high diversity and richness of European traditions, along with new and creative approaches to cinema.

The three films will be screened during the “LUX Film Days” in the 28 Member states, while the award ceremony will take place in December, the winner being voted by the European Parliament.
