Parliament approves €3.7 million in EU aid to get Italian workers back into jobs
Parliament has approved aid worth €3.7 million from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGAF) to help workers in Italy who lost their jobs as a result of globalisation or the economic crisis to re-enter the labour market.
Some 1,030 workers were laid off by the high-end automobile maker De Tomaso Automobili S.p.A. in the Torino and Livorno provinces. A further 529 workers lost their jobs when two computing firms in Lombardy,, Anovo Italia S.p.A. and Jabil CM S.r.l., went under. The aid was approved by 585 votes to 66, with 13 abstentions.
The Italian authorities will receive €1,164,930 to help the redundant workers in Lombardy, and another €2,594,672 to help those formerly employed by De Tomaso Automobili. The EGAF, with an annual ceiling of €500 million, contributes to packages of tailor-made services to help redundant workers find new jobs. The aid was approved by 584 votes to 67, with 7 abstentions.
Parliament's decision still needs to be endorsed by Council.
