Development summit: how to translate ambitious goals into concrete proposals

World leaders are set to adopt 17 Sustainable Development Goals during the UN Sustainable Development Summit in New York on 25-27 September. A delegation from Parliament’s Development committee will attend to discuss with a broad range of officials, experts and stakeholders how these goals should then be concretely translated into EU and national policies.

About the summit

More than 15O world leaders are expected the summit this weekend to set a new sustainable development agenda in the hope of ending extreme poverty, fighting inequality and injustice and fixing climate change.

About the Parliament delegation

Development committee chair Linda McAvan (S&D, UK) will speak during the Interactive Dialogue "Protecting our planet and combating climate change" on 27 September.

In addition to her, the delegation will be composed of vice chair Nirj Deva (ECR, UK), the Committee's post-2015 rapporteur Davor Ivo Stier (EPP, Croatia), and MEPs Teresa Jiménez-Becerril (EPP, Spain), Elly Schlein (S&D, Italy), Arne Lietz (S&D, Germany), Beatriz Becerra Basterrechea (ALDE, ESpain) and Lola Sánchez (GUE, Spain).

Expectations

Davor Ivo Stier (EPP, Croatia), who wrote a report on the EU and the global development framework after 2015, told us what he expected from the summit:

"After more than two years of consultations and negotiations, 193 heads of states and governments and high representatives, will adopt a new sustainable development agenda at the UN summit in New York that integrates all three pillars of sustainable development: economic, social and environmental. 

"The European Parliament was active in this process and defined its position in its resolution of November 2014, insisting on poverty eradication, a rights-based approach to development and good governance.

"The EU has played a major role in shaping the new agenda. Now comes the hard part, keeping our promises, whose implementation Parliament will monitor and review."
