Climate change, inequality, ageing population, migration, terrorism... In a world of increasing complexity, uncertainty and rapid change, the challenges the European Union, its citizens and Member States face are vast.

To address these issues, the European Strategy and Policy Analysis System (ESPAS) presented on September 1st at Europe House its report "Global trends to 2030: Can the EU meet the challenges ahead?". ESPAS is an inter-institutional project bringing together the European Parliament, the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union, the European Commission and the European External Action Service (EEAS).

The document outlines three on-going revolutions - economic and technological; social and democratic, and geopolitical - and seeks to distil how they will shape the governance, markets and society of tomorrow.

James Elles, Honorary ESPAS President, introduced the report and Franck Debié, Team Leader at the Secretary-General Cabinet of the European Parliament, presented it. MEPs Mary Honeyball and Kay Swinburn, and Robin Niblett, Director at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, took part in a discussion chaired by John Peet, Europe Editor at The Economist. The audience got a chance to ask questions and raise their own concerns about the challenges facing the European Union.
