International Women's Day is always held on 8 March and this year the European Parliament is dedicating the day to fighting gender-based violence. According to a new study by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), 22% of all women in the EU have experienced physical or sexual violence by a partner, while 43% have experienced psychological abuse. In a chat with our Facebook followers on 5 March, Mikael Gustafsson, a Swedish member of the GUE/NGL group who is the chair of the women's rights committee, said violence against women is a direct reflection of gender inequality. Figures from the FRA study show how violence inhibits women for years to come. Ninety per cent of victims say they’ve experienced long term psychological consequences as a result of sexual violence by a partner.
