Parliament passed three separate resolutions on Thursday, condemning the latest outbreak of violence in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and, the unconstitutional seizure of power in the CAR in March and calling for the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms in Bahrain. MEPs urge Russia to respect ex-Soviet countries' right to choose ties with EU

Russia must respect the right of the EU's eastern neighbours to choose whether to enter into association agreements with the EU, say MEPs in a resolution passed on Thursday. For example, Russia must refrain from exerting pressure, such as its recent trade sanctions against Ukraine and Moldova and threats to Armenia, to dissuade them from signing or initialling deals with the EU at this November's Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius, adds the text. Egypt: MEPs call for a halt to violence and a rapid return to democracy

All acts of violence, terrorism and incitement in Egypt must be halted immediately, in the best interests of the country, MEPs said in a resolution passed by a show of hands on Thursday. They called on the interim authorities to end the state of emergency and to release all political prisoners, including the ousted former President Morsi, to create conditions for an inclusive political process. MEPs call for end to roaming fees by 2015

Roaming fees for making mobile phone calls, sending texts or downloading data while abroad must end by 2015, Parliament said in a vote on Thursday, in its reaction to the legislative telecoms package presented by the Commission on Wednesday. Deterrent measures against Syria must not be excluded, say MEPs

The use of chemical weapons in Syria is a war crime and a crime against humanity which demands a clear, strong, targeted and united response, not excluding eventual deterrent measures, MEPs said in a resolution passed by a show of hands on Thursday. The EU should promote a region-wide de-escalation process and increase aid to Syrian refugees, they added. (Read more: Deterrent measures against Syria must not be excluded, say MEPs)

 
 

Green light for single supervisor for banks

MEPs on Thursday gave their green light to the EU bank supervision system which will bring some 150 of the EU's largest banks under the European Central Bank's direct oversight from September 2014. MEPs strengthened the system's transparency and accountability and tasked the European Banking Authority to develop supervisory practices which national bank supervisors should follow. EP backs rules allowing suspension of visa-free travel only as a last resort

Reciprocity rules enabling the EU to reimpose visa requirements for nationals of countries that still impose them on EU citizens were adopted by Parliament on Thursday, in a revision of the EU visa regulation. Under the new rules, the EU will also be able to temporarily suspend its visa-free travel arrangements with third countries to halt substantial and sudden increases in irregular migrant numbers or unfounded asylum requests, but only as a last resort. Commission President José Manuel Barroso delivered the last state of the union speech to Parliament for this legislature on Wednesday. Political group leaders took the floor to set out the priorities which they feel Commission should address in the coming months. They stressed the need to restore trust in the EU, pointing out that the May 2014 European elections offer voters a real chance to choose its future. European Parliament backs switchover to advanced biofuels

Parliament has called for a cap on the use of traditional biofuels and a speedy switchover to new biofuels from alternative sources such as seaweed and waste, in a vote on draft legislation on Wednesday. The measures aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that result from the increasing turnover of agricultural land to biofuel production. Shale gas: environmental impact studies vote postponed

Parliament postponed Wednesday's vote on whether to include shale gas fracking in an update of the EU Environmental Impact Assessment Directive to the October I session. Before voting, MEPs want to hold a plenary debate with representatives of the European Commission and the Council Presidency.
