The EU Court of Justice ruling invalidating the 2006 data retention directive will be debated by the Civil Liberties Committee on Thursday from 12.00 to 12.30. The directive requires telecoms firms to retain phone and email data for between 6 months and 2 years. MEPs will assess the implications for EU countries and citizens with Parliament's lawyers, the Commission and the Greek Presidency of the Council. The Court found that the directive, as currently worded, is disproportionate to its aims.
