MEPs critical of breaches of freedom of expression in Turkey
MEPs from all political groups expressed their concerns over the recent arrests of journalists in Turkey and condemned all actions against media freedom, in a plenary debate on Wednesday afternoon. They agreed that the deterioration in the rule of law and fundamental rights in the country is an issue that needs to be tackled. Parliament will put a resolution to a vote in January.
MEPs said that Turkey is moving away from the core EU values whilst some said that EU's concern is a sign of commitment to the accession process.
At the opening of the session on Monday, President Martin Schulz also expressed his deep concern over these arrests and asked for explanations from the Turkish embassy.
