Elena Valenciano, Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights in the European Parliament, on the death of Berta Cáceres

"I condemn in the strongest terms the brutal killing of Berta Cáceres, world-renowned human rights defender and indigenous leader from Honduras.

We call for the swift reaction of the authorities to thoroughly investigate this murder and bring to justice those responsible. This crime cannot go unpunished.

Through a cowardly and hideous crime they have taken the life of a brave and unwavering woman but Berta Caceres's cause will live on through all those in Honduras -and in many other countries in the world- who keep struggling to peacefully defend the rights and freedoms of the most vulnerable.

This is the appalling chronicle of a death foretold. Berta lived for decades under threat and harassment. We therefore urge the Honduran government to guarantee by all means possible the protection of human rights defenders who legitimately defend the rights of their communities through peaceful means. In particular we call for the immediate protection of Mexican activist Gustavo Castro Soto, (member of 'Otros Mundos-FoE México' NGO) who resulted injured during the assassination of Berta Cáceres, and whose life is at serious risk now."
