Appointment of next ECB Vice-President

Press Releases

Statement by the Chairman of the Economics and Monetary Committee, Roberto Gualtieri:

The term of office of ECB Vice-President Vitor Constâncio will end on 31 May 2018. In the context of the forthcoming appointment of his successor, in agreement with the coordinators I have invited the two shortlisted nominees for the position for informal and in camera, separate exchanges of views on Wednesday 14 February, with Members of the ECON Committee. It is my intention to provide, on behalf of the Committee, feedback to the Council after these informal meetings.

The following step in the formal procedure for the appointment of the successor – governed by the Treaty (Article 283 TFEU) – is expected with the nomination of a candidate by the ECOFIN Council on 20 February, with a view to consulting the European Parliament and the Governing Council of the ECB. The ECON Committee will subsequently organise its public hearing with the selected candidate (provisionally scheduled on 26 February), and is expected to vote on a report on this matter on 27 February. The plenary vote on Parliament’s opinion on the candidate is scheduled to take place during the March plenary.
