The award ceremony for this year’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, conferred to Ukrainian film director Oleg Sentsov, will be held on 12 December.

The ceremony will take place in the European Parliament’s hemicycle in Strasbourg.

You can book an interview slot with the representatives of Mr Sentsov - his cousin Ms Natalya Kaplan and lawyer Mr Dmitriy Dinze - by sending an email to viktor.almqvist@europarl.europa.eu (written press) and eliana.dritsas@europarl.europa.eu (audiovisual media) by Wednesday 5 December at 12.00 at the latest. Please note that your specific timeslot will be confirmed only on Friday 7 December, not earlier.

Information on the language combination

Interpretation will be available for the interviews with the representatives of the laureate in either Russian-English or Russian-French. Therefore, it is essential that journalists inform the EP Press Service in advance what language combination they need, so that slots can be assigned with the languages requested.

Oleg Sentsov, 2018 Sakharov Prize laureate

Imprisoned Ukrainian film director Oleg Sentsov is this year’s Sakharov Prize laureate, following a decision by European Parliament’s President Antonio Tajani and the political groups’ leaders on 25 October. Mr Sentsov is serving a 20-year prison sentence in Russia for “plotting terrorist acts” against the Russian “de facto” rule in Crimea. The two other finalists were 11 non-governmental organisations rescuing migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea and Nasser Zefzafi, leader of the Moroccan mass protest movement, Hirak.
