Plenary Session – Strasbourg

European debt crisis / EU summit. Parliament will, in the presence of the President Herman Van Rompuy, assess the outcome of the 8-9 December European Council, dominated by the efforts of heads of state and government to agree measures to overcome the crisis. It also reviews Poland's six-month presidency, which ends on 31 December. A press conference by President Buzek and Prime Minister Donald Tusk is scheduled for 11.30 on Wednesday (Tuesday/Wednesday).


2011 Sakharov Prize. President Jerzy Buzek will award the 2011 Sakharov prize for freedom of thought to five Arab Spring activists for their contribution to historic changes in the Arab world, at a ceremony in the plenary chamber. A press conference by President Buzek and the laureates will take place at 12.30 (Wednesday).


Protection of crime victims. Crime victims who are granted protection from their aggressors in one EU Member State could get similar protection if they move to another, under new rules to be voted by Parliament. Victims would be protected from crimes including gender violence, harassment, abduction, stalking and attempted murder (debate Monday, vote Tuesday).


Single work and residence permit. Third country migrants working legally in the EU should enjoy comparable rights to those of EU nationals as regards working conditions, social security and access to public services, under a new "single permit" law (debate Monday, vote Tuesday).


Fair trials. MEPs vote on legislation giving anyone suspected or accused of a crime the right to be promptly informed of his or her rights in easy-to-understand language (debate Monday, vote Tuesday).


President Buzek - end of term speech. Jerzy Buzek will take stock of his two-and-a-half-year presidency of Parliament, which expires at the end of December, in an address to the House (Thursday).


Russia/Syria. MEPs will debate the situation in Syria, the EU-Russia summit, security policy and human rights with High Representative/Vice-President Catherine Ashton. Resoltions on Syria and Russia will also be put to the vote (Debate Tuesday, Vote Wednesday).
