LUX Prize: finalist films now showing!

The three LUX Prize 2012 finalist films will be shown from Monday 5 to Friday 16 November at the European Parliament in Brussels. They are Csak a szél (Just the Wind) by Bence Fliegauf (Hungary, Germany, France), Io sono Li (Shun Li and the Poet) by Andrea Segre (Italy, France) and Tabu by Miguel Gomes (Portugal, Germany, France, Brazil). The winner will be unveiled on 21 November in Strasbourg.

The films can be viewed in the LUX Cinema, behind the VoxBox area, on the third floor of Parliament's Altiero Spinelli building. MEPs may vote for their favourite film until 20 November. Any other person authorised to enter the European Parliament may also watch the films. This year, members of the public will also be able to vote for their favourite film, and the winner will get a public mention.

The European Parliament screenings are part of the LUX FILM DAYS series shown in EU member states and those planned for this week at the Brussels Bozar cinema, in the presence of MEPs.

This year's contenders

The three finalist films for the 2012 LUX prize were revealed on 24 July, at the Venice Days section (Giornate degli Autori) of the Venice International Film Festival.

Csak a szél (Just the Wind), by Bence Fliegauf - Hungary, Germany, France

Inspired by real events, the film tells the story of a Roma family, living in rural Hungary, who, like the entire Roma community, must face up to fear and racist aggression. 

Io sono Li (Shun Li and the Poet), by Andrea Segre - Italy, France

Shun Li travaille is working in the outskirts of Rome, to get her papers and enable her son to come to Italy.  She is suddenly transferred to a small city-island in the Veneto lagoon, where she befriends Bepi, a Slav fisherman, nicknamed "the poet". The friendship between Shun Li and Bepi upsets both the Chinese and local communities, who interfere with this new voyage, of which they are perhaps simply too afraid.

Tabu by Miguel Gomes - Portugal, Germany, France, Brazil

A temperamental old lady, her Cape Verdean maid and a neighbour committed to social causes live in the same Lisbon apartment block. When the old lady dies, the other two women find out about an episode from her past: a story of love and crime set in an Africa that looks like something out of an adventure movie.

LUX Prize award ceremony

The 2012 Lux Prize winner will be announced by European Parliament President Martin Schulz in Strasbourg on 21 November.

A press conference with representatives of the three films is to be held in Strasbourg on 21 November, after the results are announced. Journalists will be able to interview representatives of the films.
