Committee meetings, Brussels

Public health/glyphosate. Environment and Public Health Committee Members will state their position on whether or not the European Union should renew the marketing authorisation for the controversial herbicide glyphosate. This substance was classified as probably carcinogenic for humans by the World Health Organisation (WHO), but the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) considers this unlikely. (Tuesday)


Budgetary control. The Budgetary Control Committee will vote on whether to approve spending by EU institutions and bodies in the 2014 financial year, taking into account performance, financial management and control. (Tuesday and Wednesday)


EU funds for migration. Migration Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos will join the Budgetary Control Committee to debate how the EU is using its migration policy funds, evaluating recent decisions and monitoring spending. (Wednesday)


Banks in TAXE II. Representatives from ING Group (NL), Crédit Agricole (FR), Nordea (SW), Santander (ES), UBS (CH), Unicredit (IT) will meet members of the Special Committee on Tax Rulings (TAXEII) to discuss if, and how, their banks provide advice and structured financial products for tax optimisation purposes. (Monday afternoon)


Country of origin labelling for certain foods. Environment and Public Health Committee Members are likely to reiterate their demand for binding EU rules on country of origin labelling of meat, processed meat, and milk. A 2013 Eurobarometer survey showed that consumers favour such labelling of milk and meat. (Tuesday)


Palestine. Palestine’s Foreign Affairs Minister Riad Al-Malki will join Foreign Affairs Committee Members to debate the political situation there, including the inter-Palestinian reconciliation talks, the economic and humanitarian situation in occupied Palestinian territories, initiatives for re-launching Middle East peace process, and the regional situation. (Tuesday)


Grand Mufti of Egypt. Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim Allam, Grand Mufti of Egypt, will also join the Foreign Affairs Committee to debate interreligious and intercultural dialogue (Tuesday)


Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The progress towards EU membership made by Albania and Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2015 will be assessed in two resolutions to be voted by the Foreign Affairs Committee. Issues such as the reform process, fighting organised crime and religious tolerance in both countries will be addressed. (Tuesday)


Euronest. The 5th session of Euronest Parliamentary Assembly (PA), which brings together MEPs and MPs from Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, will be held in Parliament’s premises. Agenda items include common security threats, reacting to Russian disinformation, ways forward for energy cooperation and the movement of skilled labour. (Monday to Wednesday)
