Trade secrets: EP/Council deal backed by Legal Affairs Committee

A provisional deal on new rules to help firms win legal redress against theft or misuse of their trade secrets was endorsed by the Legal Affairs Committee on Thursday. The deal, struck by Parliament and Council negotiators in December, now needs to be endorsed by Parliament as a whole as well as the Council of Ministers. Bloquear el acceso de los consumidores a bienes y servicios en línea en base a su dirección IP, su dirección postal o el país emisor de su tarjeta de crédito es una práctica injustificada a la que hay que poner fin, señala el Parlamento en una resolución adoptada el martes. First-ever EU-wide cyber-security rules backed by Internal Market Committee

Firms supplying essential services, e.g. for energy, transport, banking and health, or digital ones, such as search engines and cloud computing, will have to take action to improve their ability to withstand cyber-attacks under new rules approved by Internal Market MEPs on Thursday. These rules, informally agreed by MEPs and Council negotiators on 7 December, were approved by 34 votes to 2. They now need to be endorsed by the Council and the full Parliament. Los robos de información pueden ser muy perjudiciales para los consumidores, las empresas y los Gobiernos, como quedó demostrado en 2007 con los costosos ciberataques a Estonia y en 2014 contra Sony. La Unión Europea ha acordado un conjunto común de normas básicas sobre ciberseguridad para reforzar sus defensas ante ataques contra servicios esenciales. La amenaza terrorista ha dado alas a quienes reclaman controles de armas más estrictos. Los eurodiputados debaten este miércoles un informe que pide una aplicación más estricta de las normas sobre exportación de armamento. El informe se someterá a la votación del pleno el jueves. Las exportaciones de armamento de los Estados de la Unión Europea (UE) destinadas a países ajenos a la UE se elevaron a 26.700 millones de euros en 2013. Protecting trade secrets – MEPs strike a deal with Council

New rules to help businesses obtain legal redress against the theft or misuse of their trade secrets were informally agreed by Parliament and Council negotiators on Tuesday. MEPs ensured that freedom of expression and information will be protected and that the new rules will not restrict the work of journalists. Energy Union: integrate markets and link up to buy supplies, urge MEPs

The Energy Union must provide EU citizens with secure, sustainable and affordable energy, say MEPs in a non-legislative resolution voted on Tuesday. Building it will demand concerted efforts by EU countries to reduce their dependence on energy imports, by integrating their energy markets, improving security of supply, making the best use of existing and renewable sources, and moderating demand, they add. La integración completa del mercado eléctrico europeo supondría una rebaja de precio de al menos 2€ por MWh, lo que permitiría a los consumidores europeos ahorrarse hasta 40.000 millones anuales hasta 2030, según los cálculos incluidos en una resolución no legislativa adoptada por el Parlamento el martes. Boost digital single market with apps and stop geo-blocking, say MEPs

Innovation-friendly policies are needed to boost the sharing economy and online platforms but unjustified geo-blocking must be stopped, say the internal market and industry committees in a resolution passed on Monday night. They point out that developing e-government and e-skills could help the EU digital single market to generate €415 billion a year. MEPs close deal with Council on first ever EU rules on cybersecurity

Transport and energy companies will have to ensure that the digital infrastructure that they use to deliver essential services, such as traffic control or electricity grid management, is robust enough to withstand cyber-attacks, under new rules provisionally agreed by internal market MEPs and the Luxembourg Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers on Monday. Online marketplaces like eBay or Amazon, search engines and clouds will also be required to ensure that their infrastructure is secure.
