Workers at fashion retailer Sprider Stores in Greece and at jewellery maker Andersen Ireland Limited in Ireland are to receive EU aid worth €8.8 million to help find or create new jobs. The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) aid applications, already accepted by the Council of Ministers, were approved by Parliament on Wednesday. MEPs call on Turkey to stop provocations in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone

MEPs condemned Turkey’s “maritime survey” activities as encroaching upon the Republic of Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone and its sovereign right to explore the natural resources within it, in a resolution voted on Thursday. The text also calls on Turkey to stop its “provocative actions” and “threats” against the Republic of Cyprus. South Sudan: MEPs call on the global community to impose targeted sanctions

The European Parliament strongly condemned the resumption of violence in South Sudan which has caused the deaths of more than 10,000 people, in a resolution voted on Thursday. Northern Ireland peace process: MEPs urge all parties to restart stalled talks

The European Parliament called on all parties to join talks to restart the stalled Northern Ireland peace process in a resolution voted on Thursday. MEPs stressed the need to combat low pay and unemployment, so as to halt violent and criminal efforts to undermine the process. Talks broke down in December 2013 due to disputes over issues such as welfare spending, flags and emblems, and parading. Check EU spending results, not just payment errors, says Parliament

The EU should check what EU funds spent in member states achieve, and not just that they are spent according to the rules, said MEPs debating the European Court of Auditors (ECA) annual report on EU spending in 2013 in plenary session on Wednesday. Data from member states on how they spend EU funds are too often unreliable, they added. The overall error rate in 2013 was 4.7%, slightly down on 2012. 80% of all funds are spent in and by the member states. Parliament commemorated 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall

At the beginning of the plenary session on Wednesday, the President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz and political group leaders commemorated the events of 9 November 1989, when citizens peacefully tore down the Berlin Wall and thus paved the way for German reunification. Oktoobri täiskogul kinnitas parlament ametisse Jean Claude-Junckeri juhitava uue Euroopa Komisjoni. Senine komisjoni president José Manuel Barroso pidas aga oma lahkumiskõne. Lisaks olid saadikud vastu liikmesriikide ettepanekule vähendada ELi 2015. aasta eelarveettepanekut ning tänavuse Sahharovi auhinna pälvis kongolasest günekoloog Denis Mukwege.
