Parliament asks EU Commission to press for full US-EU visa reciprocity

The EU Commission is legally obliged to take measures temporarily reintroducing visa requirements for US citizens, given that Washington still does not grant visa-free access to nationals of five EU countries. In a resolution approved on Thursday, MEPs urge the Commission to adopt the necessary legal measures “within two months”. Ukrainian citizens will be able to travel to the EU visa free under an informal deal struck by Parliament and Council negotiators on Tuesday. Once the change enters into force, and provided they have biometric passports, they will be able to enter the EU for up to 90 days in any 180-day-period for business, tourist or family purposes. Neljapäeval parlamendi toetuse saanud tõhustatud viisavabaduse peatamise mehhanismi alusel saab viisanõude kolmandate riikide kodanikele sisse viia kiirendatud korras kui esineb suurel määral viisavabaduse tingimuste eiramist või tekib oht sisejulgeolekule. The EU Commission should comply with EU law by temporarily reintroducing visa requirements for US citizens, so as to encourage Washington to grant citizens of all EU countries visa-free access to the US, said a majority of MEPs in a debate in plenary on Wednesday. Georgia to get visa-free access to the EU, MEPs and Council negotiators agree

The EU Commission and member states will be able to reimpose visa requirements faster and more easily under new rules agreed by Parliament and Council negotiators on Wednesday. (Read more: Visa suspension mechanism: Parliament and Council negotiators strike a deal )

 

Plans to waive visa requirements for Ukrainian citizens entering the Schengen area were approved by the Civil Liberties Committee on Monday. If approved by Parliament and Council, it will allow Ukrainians who have a biometric passport to enter the EU area without a visa for 90 days in any 180-day period, for business, tourist or family purposes.
