Parliament’s mid-term election: 14 Vice-Presidents and 5 Quaestors elected

An MEP casts his vote for the elections of European Parliament VPs  

Following the election of the President, MEPs elected 14 Vice-Presidents in two ballots on Wednesday. To be elected, candidates needed to win an absolute majority of valid votes cast. The new Vice-Presidents come from six different political groups. Members also elected five Quaestors, by acclamation. President Schulz called a minute’s silence for the late Portuguese statesman Mário Soares, who died on 7 January. Mr Soares fought oppression and dictatorship to bring about Portugal’s transition to democracy and accession to the European Community. Kritums uz Grieķijas salām atbraukušo skaitā tomēr stipri kontrastē ar migrantu skaitu, kas sasnieguši Itāliju. ANO ziņo, ka 2016. gads migrantiem, kas šķērsoja Vidusjūru, bijis līdz šim nāvi nesošākais gads. Pilsoņu brīvību komiteja kopā ar Komisiju, Padomi un ANO cilvēktiesību padomes pārstāvjiem 12. janvārī iezīmēja savu skatījumu par krīzi.
