Festival of Europe - European Parliament open days

Parliament condemned IS/Daesh terror attacks on the Palestinian refugee camp in Yarmouk, Syria, the harassment of labour and human rights activists in Algeria and the illegal detention of Ukrainian pilot and MP Nadiya Savchenko in Russia, in three resolutions voted on Thursday. Indonesia’s executions: MEPs call for immediate moratorium on the death penalty

Members of all European Parliament political groups condemned the recent execution of eight people in Indonesia, and called for an immediate moratorium on the death penalty there. In a debate on Thursday with international cooperation Commissioner Neven Mimica, MEPs stressed that even though they respect Indonesia's sovereignty and its fight against drug trafficking, the death penalty can never be justified. Omicidi in Kenya e persecuzione dei cristiani

In una risoluzione approvata giovedì, i deputati suggeriscono che l’UE avvii una missione di addestramento militare in Kenya e fornisca mezzi all’esercito e alla polizia kenioti per aiutare a prevenire l’espansione dell’organizzazione terroristica Al-Shabaab. Nella risoluzione del Parlamento approvata giovedì, alla vigilia dell’apertura ufficiale di Expo Milano 2005, si sottolinea che l'UE dovrebbe sfruttare tale evento per incoraggiare pratiche agronomiche sostenibili, aumentare l’equità nella catena di approvvigionamento e combattere lo spreco del cibo e la malnutrizione. Nigeria: MEPs call for international cooperation to stop Boko Haram

The massacres perpetrated by the terrorist sect Boko Haram in Nigeria were vehemently condemned by the European Parliament in a vote on Thursday. MEPs urge the Nigerian authorities to do their utmost to end the violence and tackle the root causes of the terrorism, including corruption. Parliament also urges Nigeria’s neighbours and the international community to cooperate with efforts to starve Boko Haram of income and prevent it spreading terror abroad. Albania and Bosnia & Herzegovina need to resolve domestic differences, say MEPs

Political wrangling held back the progress of reform in Albania and Bosnia & Herzegovina in 2014, say MEPs in two separate resolutions voted on Thursday. Both countries need to strengthen their democratic processes, tackle corruption and put in place professional and depoliticised public administrations. By cooperating to achieve these aims, their political forces can move them closer to the EU, they add. The European Parliament Conference of Presidents (EP President and political group leaders) this morning decided that Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee will address the situation in Hungary as a matter of urgency, further to the statement by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán about a possible restoration of the death penalty and the preparation of a questionnaire designed to encourage Hungarian citizens to state positions on immigration questions. Giovedì mattina, il Parlamento interrogherà la Commissione sulle decisione prese per affrontare l'epidemia di batteri Xylella fastidiosa, che hanno infettato diverse migliaia di ettari di piantagioni di ulivi in Italia e su come impedirne la diffusione nelle altre regioni dell'UE. Verrà inoltre chiesto alla Commissione di specificare in che modo saranno ripagati tutti coltivatori i cui alberi devono essere distrutti. More must be done to improve working conditions in Bangladesh, say MEPs

Parliament marked the second anniversary of the Rana Plaza textile factory collapse in Bangladesh, which killed over 1,100 people, by welcoming progress made by the EU-led initiative to improve working conditions there. But much remains to be done, including tackling anti-union discrimination and allegedly endemic corruption of health and safety inspectors, it adds, in a resolution voted on Wednesday.
