Nominees for Sakharov Prize 2014 announced

Seven nominees for the European Parliament’s 2014 Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought, chosen by political groups and groups of MEPs, will be presented at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Development committees and the Human Rights Subcommittee on 23 September, at 16:15. Il Parlamento europeo accoglie con favore i segnali di speranza per la pace in Ucraina e l'accordo di associazione UE-Ucraina appena ratificato, ma si dichiara preoccupato dalle reali intenzioni della Russia nella "guerra ibrida" non dichiarata contro l'Ucraina. In una risoluzione votata giovedì, si esorta l'UE a tenere testa alla Russia e a intensificare il sostegno agli agricoltori europei colpiti dal divieto di commercio. The candidate commissioners as presented by incoming Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, will be scrutinised by the European Parliament committees from 29 September to 7 October. Members will evaluate candidates' suitability before the full house votes on the proposed Commission. Libya: EU must step up efforts to support stability and democracy, MEPs say

The EU must step up its involvement in supporting Libya’s stability and transition to democracy, said the European Parliament in a vote on Thursday. MEPs condemned the growing use of violence there, especially against civilians, and called for a ceasefire between the fighting factions. They also said humanitarian assistance, the safety of civilians and the security of humanitarian personnel must be ensured by all parties in the conflict. Human rights: Azerbaijan; the case of Mbonimpa in Burundi; Bangladesh

The European Parliament called on Azerbaijan to proceed with human rights reforms, Burundi to release human rights campaigner Pierre Claver Mbonimpa, and Bangladesh to apply international labour standards, in three resolutions voted on Thursday. Gli omicidi dei giornalisti James Foley e Steven Sotloff e dell'operatore umanitario David Haines eseguiti dal cosiddetto "Stato islamico" (IS) sono stati duramente condannati dal Parlamento in una risoluzione approvata giovedì. I deputati chiedono all'UE di utilizzare tutti i mezzi possibili per aiutare le autorità nazionali e locali irachene a combattere l'IS, compresa un'adeguata assistenza militare. In una risoluzione votata giovedì, i deputati affermano che l'epidemia del virus ebola esplosa nell'Africa occidentale è stata sottovalutata dalla comunità internazionale e costituisce oggi una sfida per la sicurezza globale. I paesi colpiti sono confrontati al collasso socio-economico e si dovrebbe considerare il dispiegamento dei mezzi militari sotto l'egida delle Nazioni Unite e facilitare ulteriormente l'accesso alle cure esistenti. EU aid to help workers made redundant in various industries in Spain, The Netherlands, Romania and Greece to find new jobs was approved by the European Parliament on Wednesday. The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) funding, which would complement national efforts, now needs to be approved by the Council of Ministers. MEPs question high pricing of certain life-saving medicines

The pharmaceutical industry is raising the prices of new, life-saving medicines ever higher, thus threatening the equal access to treatments while increasing the burden on healthcare systems, said MEPs during a debate with Council and the Commission on Tuesday. MEPs split over EU free trade deal with Canada
