Aggressive tax planning: tax and economic affairs MEPs debate with OECD chiefs

Following a joint hearing with EU taxation Commissioner Pierre Moscovici on Monday, members of the Special Tax Rulings and Economic and Monetary Affairs committees will jointly debate tax issues with OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría and Director of Centre for Tax Policy Pascal Saint-Amans on Tuesday morning. Gilles de Kerchove, EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, will brief the Foreign Affairs Committee on the latest measures taken by the EU in its fight against terrorism on Monday at 17.00. MEPs are also likely to raise questions about the EU counter-terrorism cooperation with the third countries, namely those in the EU neighbourhood. Foreign Affairs Committee debate with NATO Secretary General on Monday

The Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a debate with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, today from 16.00 in room JAN 2Q2. Discussion is likely to focus on recent developments in Ukraine, relations with Russia, the security situation in the south and east of the Mediterranean and EU-NATO relations after NATO’s 2014 Wales summit. Democracy and values are problematic in DRC, says Denis Mukwege

Dr Denis Mukwege, the 2014 Sakharov Prize laureate, described political problems in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and his difficulties in tackling the problem of sexual abuse of women and even small children, in a Human Rights Subcommittee debate on Thursday. MEPs discussed how the EU could best support Dr Mukwege’s work, and some called for legally-binding rules on trade in conflict minerals. Commission to clarify whether minimum wage may apply to foreign lorry drivers

The question of whether Germany’s minimum pay rules should apply to foreign lorry drivers using its roads divided MEPs evenly in a debate with transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc on Wednesday evening. The European Commission is still assessing the implications of these rules, which the Germany partially suspended (for transit drivers) early this year, but they must in any event comply with EU law, she said. Terror attacks targeted Tunisia's democratic path: MEPs call for more EU support

The 18 March terrorist attacks on the Tunis Bardo museum were clearly directed against Tunisia’s transition to democracy, as the “lone success story of the ‘Arab Spring’”, said MEPs in a debate with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Wednesday evening. All speakers insisted on the need to maintain or beef up EU support for Tunisia, so to in encourage it to pursue its democratic transition and not be intimidated by attempts to cause anarchy and chaos. O Parlamento Europeu aprovou hoje, por 444 votos a favor, 110 contra e 41 abstenções, um relatório da comissão parlamentar dos Assuntos Económicos que avança com uma série de medidas para reforçar a luta contra a fraude fiscal, a evasão fiscal, a elisão fiscal, o planeamento fiscal agressivo e os paraísos fiscais. EU member states must be more transparent about their national tax rulings, because unfair tax competition distorts competition among companies and could lead to a “race to the bottom”, warned many MEPs in Wednesday’s debate with taxation Commissioner Pierre Moscovici. O Parlamento Europeu aprovou hoje a proposta da Comissão de conceder 1,8 mil milhões de euros adicionais em assistência macrofinanceira à Ucrânia, sob a forma de empréstimos a médio prazo. A assistência da UE visa ajudar o país a cobrir parte das suas necessidades de financiamento externo em 2015 e no início de 2016, no contexto do programa do FMI.
