Air quality legislation: MEPs strike deal with Council

Plans for more ambitious national caps on emissions of key pollutants by 2030, including NOx, particulates and sulphur dioxide, were informally agreed by MEPs and the Dutch presidency of the Council on Thursday. Air pollution causes about 400,000 premature deaths in the EU per year. The agreement now needs to be endorsed by the Environment Committee and Parliament as a whole. MEPs and ministers struck a deal on a ban on fishing below a depth of 800 meters in the North-East Atlantic. The ban, agreed on Thursday afternoon, will apply to bottom trawling and would also restrict deep-sea fishing to the area where it took place between 2009 and 2011. The EU needs to update its long-term spending plan to cope with unforeseen crises such as mass migration, terrorism and youth unemployment, says the Budgets Committee in a resolution voted on Wednesday. The text is intended as an input to the forthcoming EU Commission’s proposal to revise the EU’s multiannual financial framework (MFF) for 2014-2020. The update should also tackle the recurring backlog of overdue EU payments, and look beyond 2020, add MEPs. UK referendum: European Parliament debate on outcome and consequences  

Ved åbningen af den ekstraordinære samling bemærkede Europa-Parlamentets formand Martin Schulz (S&D, DE), at det var første gang, at en plenarsamling er blevet indkaldt med så kort varsel, men han påpegede også, at det britiske folks beslutning om at forlade EU også er uden fortilfælde. Han hilste Lord Hill varmt velkommen og takkede ham for hans arbejde i EU-Kommissionen samt hans beslutning om at træde tilbage efter at have ført kampagne for Storbritanniens forbliven i EU. MEPs opfordrer til hurtigt Brexit for at stoppe usikkerheden samt EU-reformer

Storbritannien må respektere ønsket fra et flertal af de britiske borgere helt, fuldt og så hurtigt som muligt ved officielt at trække sig fra EU før et ny relation kan etableres, siger Europa-Parlamentet i en resolution vedtaget efter debatten på den ekstraordinære plenarforsamling tirsdag. MEPerne understreger samtidig det presserende behov for reformer for at sikre, at EU lever op til borgernes forventninger. Som opfølgning på Storbritanniens folkeafstemning om EU-medlemskab besluttede Europa-Parlamentets formandskonference (bestående af Parlamentets formand og lederne af de politiske grupper) fredag morgen at afholde et ekstraordinært plenarmøde tirsdag den 28. juni kl.10.00. Under samlingen vil MEPerne stemme om en resolution, der analyserer resultatet og mulige veje frem. EU-Kommissionens formand Jean-Claude Juncker og repræsentanter for Rådet deltager også. Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, puts his state’s case to MEPs  

"Det er tid for vores folk til at leve i frihed, uden mure og checkpoints", sagde præsidenten for den Palæstinensiske Nationale Autoritet Mahmoud Abbas i sin tale til MEPerne torsdag. Han overbragte sit folks taknemmelighed til Europa-Parlamentet for at anerkende en palæstinensisk stat og kritiserede Israel for sin fortsatte besættelse af palæstinensiske områder. European travel document: MEPs and ministers strike informal deal

A new standard European travel document to speed the return of non-EU nationals staying "irregularly" in EU member states without valid passports or identity cards was informally agreed by MEPs and EU ministers on Thursday evening. A key goal during the talks has been to increase third countries’ acceptance of the document through improved technical details. To enter into force, this informal deal needs to be formally endorsed by the full Parliament and the Council of Ministers.
