Giovanni Buttarelli named new data protection watchdog

MEPs zero in on internet search companies and clouds

The European Parliament called on EU member states and the European Commission to break down barriers to the growth of the EU's digital single market in a resolution voted on Thursday. MEPs also stressed the need to prevent online companies from abusing dominant positions by enforcing EU competition rules and unbundling search engines from other commercial services. Motion of censure against the Commission rejected by a large majority  

The European Parliament rejected a motion of censure against Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker’s team on Thursday, with 461 votes against, 101 in favour and 88 abstentions. The motion was tabled by 76 EFDD and non-attached MEPs further to the "Lux leaks" plenary session debate with Mr Juncker on 12 November. A debate on the motion was held on Monday. Deal secured to boost infrastructure investment in the EU

A negotiating team led by Alain Lamassoure (EPP, FR) struck a political deal with the Council and the Commission on European Long Term Investment Funds (ELTIFs) on Wednesday evening. These funds should boost non-bank financing for projects that deliver infrastructure, intellectual property or research results which benefit the real economy and society. Climate change talks: MEPs chart the course from Lima to Paris

Talks to be held in Lima next month should enable global partners to reach an ambitious climate agreement in Paris in 2015, so as to keep the world on track for a sub-2°C climate warming scenario, Parliament said in a resolution voted on Wednesday. Investing €315 billion to jump-start the EU economy

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker announced the creation of a new EU strategic investment fund designed to mobilise at least €315 billion over the next three years to jump-start the EU economy. After his presentation in Parliament’s plenary session on Wednesday, MEPs from most political groups voiced support, but also demanded swift action to boost growth in the EU. Debates on EU approach to migration and the expulsion of migrants from Spain

The need for a holistic EU approach to migration and concerns over the way migrants are treated in Spain were debated with the new European Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos on Tuesday. This approach should provide for more solidarity and fair sharing of responsibility among member states, properly fulfilled search and rescue duties, safe and legal routes for refugees into the EU and better cooperation with third countries, said MEPs.
