Parliament passed three resolutions on Thursday, calling on the Russian authorities not to close down the Memorial civil rights NGO; urging the Uzbek authorities to take immediate action to protect human rights; and calling for the immediate arrest of all those responsible for the disappearance of 43 students in Mexico. Concerns about how to reconcile the fundamental rights and non-discrimination of migrants with the need to gather information to dismantle criminal networks profiting from trafficking were the key points raised by MEPs in Wednesday evening’s debate with the Italian Presidency of the Council, represented by Benedetto Della Vedova on the EU-wide police crackdown on clandestine migrants "Mos Maiorum". IS fighters returning to EU: MEPs debate how to prevent internal security threat

Concerns over the possible threats to the EU's internal security posed by Europeans returning home after fighting for the so-called “Islamic State” (IS) were raised by MEPs in a debate on Wednesday. Some called for a swift approval of the EU Passenger Name Record (PNR) proposal to better detect potential terrorists entering or leaving the EU. Most stressed, however, that all measures taken by the EU to tackle this problem must respect fundamental rights. L-Erbgħa filgħodu l-MEPs approvaw il-kulleġġ il-ġdid ta' 27 Kummissarji, kif ippreżentati mill-President elett Jean-Claude Juncker, b'423vot favur, 209 vot kontra, u 67 astensjoni. Il-Kummissjoni l-ġdida issa tinħatar formalment mill-kapijiet ta' stat jew gvern tal-UE u tibda l-mandat tagħha għall-ħames snin li ġejjin fl-1 ta' Novembru. EU countries should act on their economic reform pledges, say MEPs

EU countries need to act more like owners of economic policy reform pledges they themselves signed up to, MEPs stress in a report adopted on Wednesday. Given that only 10% of the European Commission's country-specific reform recommendations (CSRs) for 2013 were implemented in full and that little or no progress was made on 45% of them, MEPs believe "there is an inconsistency between European commitment and national implementation of the CSRs by member states". After reviewing the last two hearings of commissioners-designate held the day before in Strasbourg, the Conference of Presidents, the group leaders, unanimously declared the hearings process closed. (Read more: Hearings of candidate commissioners closed; vote on new Commission tomorrow )

 
 

Mr Giovanni Buttarelli was voted top candidate for the post of European Data Protection Supervisor by the Civil Liberties Committee on Tuesday after three and a half hours of hearings on Monday evening. Top candidate for Assistant Supervisor is Mr Wojciech Wiewiorowski. The appointments still need to be agreed with the Council of Ministers. EU values must be respected in Hungary and in all other member states, MEPs say

Concerns about perceived threats to democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights in Hungary were raised by MEPs in a debate with the Italian Presidency of the Council, represented by Benedetto Della Vedova, and Commissioner Martine Reicherts on Tuesday. Hungarian laws and practices having an overall impact on pluralism, freedom of speech, media freedom and civil society were some of the issues discussed during the debate.
