Healthy eating habits start young, so the EU and its member states should do and spend more to encourage kids to eat healthy and local foods, Parliament said on Wednesday. To ensure that they get healthy eating lessons, as well as school milk, fruit, and vegetables from EU schemes, Parliament amended draft rules and approved a mandate for MEPs to negotiate their final form with EU member states. Still much to be done, CAR president tells foreign affairs committee

"The Central African Republic is doing much better. There is a clear improvement even if it is still very fragile," CAR's interim president, Catherine Samba-Panza, told foreign affairs MEPs on Tuesday. CAR still needs the EU's "multi-dimensional aid", she stressed, calling on member states to redouble their efforts to help the CAR meet its electoral, budgetary and security challenges. The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, addressed the European Parliament  

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon will deliver a formal address to Parliament at 15.15 today. He is expected to address the recent refugee tragedies in the Mediterranean and to support the EU Agenda on Migration. (Read more: Address by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and debate on G7 )

 

A reform of the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), informally agreed with the Latvian Presidency of the Council of Ministers, was backed by the Environment Committee on Tuesday. The reform aims to reduce the surplus of carbon credits available for trading in order to support the price of the emission rights. The scheme would start operating in 2019. Torsdag d. 28. maj stemmer Udvalget for International Handel om en betænkning. Det drejer sig om den såkaldte TTIP, der er den foreslåede frihandelsaftale mellem EU og USA. Lovforslaget om en fælles juridisk og finansiel ramme for skolemælk og skolefrugt i uddannelsesinstitutioner vil blive drøftet og stemt i plenarforsamlingen onsdag den 27. maj. Den fælles ordning vil reducere de administrative byrder og fremme europæiske børns forbrug af frugt, grøntsager og mejeriprodukter. EP denne uge: TTIP, Ban Ki Moon, Tunesien

EP this week  

Udvalget om International Handel stemmer i denne uge om det transatlantiske handels- og investeringspartnerskab, TTIP, mens FN 's generalsekretær Ban Ki-Moon vil tale til tale til plenarforsamlingen onsdag. Ugen i Strasbourg: maj

Europa-Parlamentet medlemmer var fra d. 18.-21. maj samlet til plenarmøde i Strasbourg. MEP’erne godkendte foranstaltninger, der skal forhindre at mineraler fra konfliktområder bruges til at finansiere væbnede konflikter. Man opfordrede også de nationale regeringer til at ende den fastlåste situation om barselsorlov. Illegale immigranter var igen på dagsordenen, og plenarforsamlingen godkendte også nye regler, som skal forhindre hvidvaskning af penge. Læs mere her og få overblik over plenarugen.
