Earth Hour: European Parliament to switch off lights

The European Parliament will once again mark "Earth Hour" by switching off lights in all its buildings for one hour this Friday and Saturday. The official Earth Hour is on Saturday 27 March from 20.30h, but to boost the impact, Parliament will also switch its lights off on Friday, March 26 at 18.00h. Una strategia europea per la lotta contro la discriminazione dei rom

Il Parlamento condanna la recrudescenza del razzismo contro i rom e ribadisce la necessità di elaborare una strategia europea per la loro inclusione sociale. Sollecita inoltre l'assegnazione a un commissario UE dell'incarico di coordinare le politiche per i rom e riconosce la necessità di un chiaro impegno legislativo e di una dotazione di bilancio congrua. Chiede poi alle istituzioni nazionali ed europee di sostenere campagne di educazione alla tolleranza rivolte alla popolazione non rom. Parliament approves appointment of 10 members of Court of Auditors

Parliament on Thursday approved the candidacies of seven new members of the European Court of Auditors and the re-appointment of three more. Parliament backs aid to unemployed in Lithuania

Around 1,100 former furniture and textile workers in Lithuania will receive EU aid worth €1.2 million following a vote by Parliament on Thursday. Il Presidente Buzek condanna l'assassinio di un poliziotto francese

Aprendo i lavori di oggi il Presidente Jerzy Buzek ha rivolto le condoglianze del Parlamento europeo alla famiglia e ai colleghi di Serge Nérin, ucciso da un membro dell'ETA il 16 maggio scorso. Ha poi espresso il proprio sostegno alle "Donne in bianco", spose e madri di prigionieri politici cubani , arrestate dalle forze dell'ordine per aver manifestato pacificamente mercoledì scorso all'Avana. The European Commission's budgetary management for 2008 should be formally approved, decided Parliament's Budgetary Control Committee on Tuesday in its vote on the "budget discharge procedure". By contrast, the Council's budget discharge should be postponed, said MEPs, citing a continuing lack of cooperation. EU urged to do more for young people

The EP's Committee on Culture and Education urges the EU to promote non-formal education, combat youth unemployment and help young people with special needs. In a resolution adopted on Tuesday, MEPs also say youth mobility and volunteering need to be encouraged, and more attention should be given to sex education and promoting healthy lifestyles. MEPs give conditional backing to EU diplomatic service

Budgetary and political accountability are crucial to gain Parliament’s support in setting up the diplomatic service, MEPs told Catherine Ashton on Tuesday. They also voiced firm opposition to the idea that the European External Action Service should have a secretary-general, calling instead for “political” deputies to be appointed to stand in for the High Representative when needed. MEPs insist on scrutiny over delegated legislation

To avoid making EU legislation over-complicated and technical, the Lisbon Treaty introduced a new system to delegate some limited powers to the European Commission. On Tuesday, Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee unanimously agreed its position on how this delegation of powers should be carried out, the conditions and the limits, and ways to supervise the Commission's use of those powers.
