Civil liberties MEPs to debate concerns over French surveillance law

The civil liberties committee debates France's controversial new law on surveillance powers on Thursday, 2 July. MEPs will raise concerns about the compatibility of some of the law's provisions with the European treaties with the Commission's director for criminal justice, Francisco Morillo. Cheaper mobile calls and open internet: MEPs and ministers strike informal deal

An informal deal to ban surcharges ("roaming fees") for making mobile phone calls, sending text messages or using the internet while abroad in another EU country from 15 June 2017 was struck by MEPs and EU ministers in the small hours of Tuesday morning. MEPs also inserted guarantees that all internet traffic is treated equally, without discrimination. To enter into force, this informal deal needs to be formally endorsed by the full Parliament and the Council of Ministers. TTIP: MEPs pave way for plenary vote by retabling June amendments

International Trade Committee MEPs on Monday paved the way for a plenary vote on the European Parliament’s draft recommendations for Transatlantic Trade and investment partnership (TTIP) negotiators, by retabling the June plenary amendments which had been referred back for reconsideration. The committee took the decision in two separate votes –one to retable the plenary amendments, and the other to retable requests for split or separate votes. Extraordinary meeting of the Conference of Presidents to discuss the latest developments concerning Greece with Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker  

Today the European Parliament's Conference of Presidents (EP President and political group leaders) discussed the latest situation on Greece with Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. The Conference of Presidents then discussed the situation further and adopted a position on the immediate next step that should be taken. Transport Committee MEPs will discuss aviation safety with the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Executive Director Patrick Ky and the European Commission on Monday afternoon, after the Germanwings air crash in the French Alps in March. Grecia este la limita neîndeplinirii obligațiilor de plată, Luxemburg preia președinția UE de la Letonia, eurodeputații dezbat amendamentele care au dus la amânarea votului în plen privind negocierile pentru acordul comercial UE-SUA și planurile Comisiei pentru impozitul pe venit: săptămâna este plină la Parlamentul European. Președintele Parlamentului European, Martin Schulz, și-a exprimat speranța că în curând se va ajunge la un compromis privind situația din Grecia, care să permită țării să rămână în zona euro. „Trebuie să cântărim cu grijă riscurile și să alegem calea care să nu facă, pe cât se poate, ca cetățenii să plătească pentru o criză pe care nu au cauzat-o”, a adăugat dumnealui pe 25 iunie, în discursul de la Consiliul European. The European Commission’s weak response to the first EU citizens’ initiative (ECI) petition, on the “Right2Water”, could discredit the ECI system, warn Environment Committee MEPs in a resolution voted on Wednesday. It “lacks any real ambition and failed to meet the demands of the organizers”, they add. ECIs enable citizens to ask the Commission to propose laws in areas within its competence, if they can muster at least one million signatures from at least a quarter of EU member states. Negotiations on proposals to revise the Interinstitutional Agreement on Better Regulation kicked off on Thursday with a meeting in the European Parliament between EP President Martin Schulz, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, Latvia’s Prime Minister, Laimdota Straujuma, representing the current Council Presidency and Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Xavier Bettel for the incoming Council Presidency.
