Latvian Presidency priorities discussed by EP committees

Food safety MEPs call for country of origin labelling of meat in processed foods

Meat used as an ingredient in processed foods, such as lasagne, should be labelled by country of origin as is already the case for bovine fresh meat, said Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee MEPs on Wednesday. They call on the European Commission, which published a report on the issue in late 2013, to come up with legislative proposals in order to rebuild consumer confidence in the wake of the horsemeat scandal and other food fraud cases. The human rights situation in Hungary will be assessed at a mini-hearing on Thursday morning. Депутатите в Европейския парламент почетоха жертвите на терористичните атаки в Париж в началото на пленарното заседание в Страсбург от 12 до 15 януари. В законодателната област от особено значение бе даването на повече възможности на страните-членки за недопускане на генно модифицирани култури на тяхна територия. Парламентът също така обсъди програмата на новото латвийско председателство на Съвета, както и резултатите на италианското председателство, което приключи през декември. European Ombudsman: transparency a key concern for citizens in 2013

MEPs stress the citizen’s right to good administration, and endorse the European Ombudsman’s calls for more transparent policymaking and an information campaign on the TTIP talks, in a resolution voted on Thursday. They also reiterate that the Ombudsman has a crucial role in addressing citizens’ concerns and helping the EU institutions become more open, effective and citizen friendly. Commission's 2015 work programme: no resolution adopted

EU sanctions against Russia should stay in place until it changes its aggressive policy in Ukraine, respects the ceasefire, withdraws its troops and stops supporting separatists, says Parliament in a resolution voted on Thursday. MEPs condemn “acts of terrorism” in Ukraine. urge the EU to come up with a plan to counter the Russian "information war" and help Ukraine to carry out reforms, cope with its humanitarian and health emergency and enhance its defence capabilities. В резолюция, приета в четвъртък, депутатите осъдиха полицейските акции и арести на журналисти в Турция през декември. Те призоваха турското правителство да третира свободата на медиите като приоритет и припомниха, че "свободната и плуралистична преса е основен елемент на всяка демокрация" и припомниха необходимостта от постигане на напредък с реформите, за получаването на предприсъединителни фондове. MEPs call for Italian marò accused of killing Indian fishermen to be repatriated

The European Parliament hopes that diplomatic dispute between Italy and India over the prosecution of two Italian marines accused of killing two Indian fishermen in 2012 during anti-piracy operations will soon be settled, under Italian jurisdiction and/or through international arbitration, it says in a resolution voted on Thursday. Members also called for the marines to be repatriated, as their detention without charge is a "serious breach of human rights".
