Conferentie grondrechten: "Er is al vooruitgang geboekt"

In Tirana, Albanië, wordt op 21 november een conferentie gehouden over grondrechten, non-discriminatie en de bescherming van kwetsbare groepen, met inbegrip van LGBTI-mensen, georganiseerd door het EP, de Europese Commissie en het Italiaanse voorzitterschap. EP-ondervoorzitter, Ulrike Lunacek, rapporteur van een verslag over homofobie en discriminatie op grond van seksuele geaardheid en genderidentiteit, is één van de sprekers. Nieuw internetportal voor verzoekschriften

Het nieuwe internetportal voor verzoekschriften van het Europees Parlement is nu online. Het is ontworpen om het voor de burgers mogelijk te maken verzoekschriften online te ondertekenen en de voortgang van verzoekschriften in het Parlement te volgen. EU countries would have to reduce the use of the commonest and most polluting plastic carrier bags, under draft rules informally agreed between MEPs and the Italian Presidency of the Council on Monday and confirmed by the member states’ permanent representatives on Friday. Plastic carrier bag litter is a major environmental problem, as it is known to pollute bodies of water and aquatic eco-systems in particular. Dr Südhof over hersenen: "We begrijpen misschien één of twee procent"

"Het brein is ongelooflijk moeilijk te bevatten. Wij weten misschien een of twee procent," zei Dr Thomas Südhof in een interview voorafgaand aan zijn lezing over de hersenen in het Europees Parlement op 18 november. De Nobelprijswinnaar voor de Geneeskunde2013 werd uitgenodigd door het orgaan Evaluatie van wetenschappelijke en technische opties van het EP voor zijn jaarlijkse lezing. The EU should provide aid worth €2.35 million to help find or create new jobs for workers made redundant by shipbuilders STX Finland Oy and the GAD abattoir in France, the Budgets Committee recommended on Thursday. The European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) aid still has to be approved by Parliament as a whole and the Council of Ministers. Unpaid bills sink EU budget talks

Parliament wants to reduce the growing pile of unpaid bills, while Council’s proposal, revealed on the very last day of the budget talks, only aggravates the payment crisis, said Budgets Committee MEPs after conciliation talks between member states and the Parliament broke down on Monday night. ECB President Draghi met MEPs today to discuss financial market issues  

The European Central Bank will take unconventional monetary measures if the economic situation in the euro area requires them, ECB President Mario Draghi reiterated to economic and monetary affairs MEPs on Monday. As the Banking Union takes shape, risks could migrate from banks to the non-banking sector, he warned. Also, speaking as chair of the Systemic Risk Board, he added that there is "a vast scope for more coordination of sanctions against banks between the US and Europe". Ebola crisis needs EU action plan with concrete measures, say development MEPs

The EU should come up with a detailed action plan to combat the spread of the Ebola virus, Development Committee MEPs told Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Christos Stylianides on Monday, after he briefed them on his four-day trip to the affected countries. MEPs highlighted the need to invest in these countries' health systems and not to reduce the EU humanitarian aid budget. EP should consent to EU-Georgia association deal, says Foreign Affairs Committee

The European Parliament should grant its consent to the EU-Georgia Association Agreement in December, the Foreign Affairs Committee said in a vote on Monday. The deal, signed on 27 June 2014, aims to establish deep political association and economic integration between the EU and Georgia, leading to the progressive opening up of their markets.
