Debate on European Youth Initiative

EU member states’ progress in implementing the European Youth Initiative, a set of measures to combat youth unemployment in regions where it exceeds 25%, will be debated with Commission and Council on Wednesday, starting at 10.00. Are measures to help reduce youth unemployment working? MEPs will assess the progress of two key programmes - the European Youth Guarantee and the Youth Employment Initiative - with the Council and the Commission on Wednesday 17 September. This evaluation is sorely needed considering as many as 5.2 million young people were out of work in the EU in May. Are the prices of certain life-saving medicines too high ?

The pharmaceutical industry is placing fewer innovative medicines on the market each year but raising their prices ever higher, says an oral question to be debated with the Council and the Commission on Tuesday evening. The signing of agreements is rarely accompanied by applause, shouting and the flashing of victory signs, but this one was years in the making and responsible for a major change in European affairs. Many MEPs were quick to show their joy when the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement was ratified simultaneously by the Ukrainian and European Parliaments on Tuesday 16 September, the first time in the EU's history that such a vote took place at the same time in the EP. European Parliament ratifies EU-Ukraine Association Agreement  

The European Parliament gave its consent to the EU-Ukraine Association agreement, which includes a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (DCFTA), on Tuesday in Strasbourg. At the same time, the Agreement was also ratified by the Ukrainian Parliament in Kiev. The deal will establish a deep political association and economic integration between the EU and Ukraine and provide for mutual free market access. MEPs to quiz Commission on progress in freeing the digital single market

The Commission will brief Parliament on Tuesday afternoon on progress to date in unlocking the potential of the digital single market. Measures to remove obstacles to buying goods online and using e-signatures, or to ensure that internet giants do not abuse their dominant market positions, could well figure in the debate which is set to start at 16.30 approximately. MEPs evaluate EU policy towards Russia

The EU should take a more proactive line on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and impose tougher sanctions on Russia, urged some political groups in Tuesday’s debate with EU Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Commissioner Štefan Füle. The EU must do its utmost to prevent further deaths at sea of Mediterranean migrants - this is a humanitarian catastrophe, said President Schulz of breaking news that over 200 would-be migrants had drowned when their boat sank off Libya and over 500 had drowned when their boat sank off Malta the previous week.
