Three joint private sector-EU technology projects must do better justifying their use of EU funds in 2014 before the European Parliament approves their accounts, said Budgetary Control Committee MEPs on Tuesday. Parliament should also postpone granting “discharge”, that is, approving the spending of the Council of Ministers and the European Council (EU leaders) for the same year, the committee recommended to the full House. Europeiska ungdomsevenemanget som går av stapeln i Europaparlamentet i Strasbourg den 20-21 maj kommer att vara ett unikt tillfälle för 7 500 unga européer att säga sin mening. EU:s och Turkiets relation är i fokus i EU-parlamentet den här veckan, då ledamöter i utskottet för medborgerliga fri- och rättigheter diskuterar flyktingöverenskommelsen. De ska också, till följd av attackerna i Bryssel, diskutera insatser i kampen mot terrorism och följa upp det extrainsatta mötet mellan EU:s justitie- och inrikesministrar, som hölls efter händelserna. Food safety MEPs reiterated their support for introducing mandatory country of origin labelling of meat and milk, in a non-binding resolution voted on Tuesday. Mandatory labelling would help maintain consumer confidence in food products by making the food supply chain more transparent, they say. Grand Mufti of Egypt Shawki Ibrahim Abdel-Karim Allam strongly condemned the 22 March terrorist attacks in Brussels and talked about his work challenging extremist propaganda in an exchange of views with Foreign Affairs Committee MEPs on Tuesday. They praised his efforts, but called for more dialogue within Islam and for the rule of law to be strengthened in Egypt. So long as serious concerns remain about the carcinogenicity and endocrine disruptive properties of the herbicide glyphosate, which is used in hundreds of farm, forestry, urban and garden applications, the EU Commission should not renew its authorisation. Instead, it should commission an independent review and disclose all the scientific evidence that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) used to assess glyphosate, said Environment Committee MEPs on Tuesday. The key political and administrative reforms needed in Albania are progressing, but have yet to reach a stage at which EU accession negotiations could start, said Foreign Affairs Committee MEPs on Tuesday. Bosnia and Herzogovina’s recent EU membership application was welcomed by MEPs, in a separate resolution, also voted on Tuesday. The European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) which centralises and coordinates EU member states’ fisheries inspections, will be empowered to use the data provided by its ship reporting systems to detect vessels carrying migrants under updated rules approved by Parliament's Fisheries Committee on Tuesday. Måndagen den 21 mars diskuterar utskottet för medborgerliga fri- och rättigheter och EU-kommissionen förslaget om en strategi för att återupprätta Schengen. Under toppmötet den 17-18 mars kom EU och Turkiet överens om ett avtal som gör det möjligt för EU att stärka sina yttre gränser.
