Euro area economy showed resilience after UK referendum, Mario Draghi tells MEPs

The recovery in the euro area is expected to continue at a moderate and steady pace, but slower than envisaged in June due to a lower foreign demand outlook, European Central Bank President Mario Draghi told Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee members on Monday. On the positive side, he said that the euro area economy showed resilience to global and political uncertainty, notably following the UK referendum outcome. Plans to waive visa requirements for Ukrainian citizens entering the Schengen area were approved by the Civil Liberties Committee on Monday. If approved by Parliament and Council, it will allow Ukrainians who have a biometric passport to enter the EU area without a visa for 90 days in any 180-day period, for business, tourist or family purposes. In the wake of this summer’s terrorist attacks in Europe, EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove debated trends revealed by such attacks and EU counter-terrorism measures with Civil Liberties Committee MEPs on Monday afternoon. Det særlige PANA-udvalg skal se nærmere på EUs arbejde efter lækket af Panama-papirerne. Udvalget får besøg af journalisterne bag lækagen.  

Parlamentets “Panama Papers”-udvalg begynder sin undersøgelse tirsdag d. 27. september, når de journalister, der afslørede skandalen – medlemmerne af The International Consortium for Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) – besøger Parlamentet for at fremvise deres arbejde. En travl uge venter MEPerne.  

MEPerne i det særlige Panama-udvalg begynder deres arbejde i denne uge med høring af journalisterne, der først skrev historierne om selskaber og privatpersoner, der gemte deres formuer i skattely i den centralamerikanske stat. Industriudvalget vil se på Kommissionens nye forslag om afskaffelse af roaming-priser for forbrugere og selskaber fra næste år. MEPerne fra LIBE-delegationen var i Libanon.  

En delegation af medlemmer fra Parlamentets udvalg for Borgernes Rettigheder og Retlige og Indre Anliggender rejste til Libanon mellem d. 19.-22. september for at besøge syriske flygtninge, der skal igennem genbosættelsesprocessen i Europa, palæstinensiske flygtninge, der i årevis har levet i den samme lejr, internationale organisationer og lokale NGO’er. Målet? At få et indblik i, hvad lovgivere kan gøre bedre, når de fremtidige regler for genbosættelse af flygtninge skal revideres. What future for the Jewish communities in Europe?

The current situation in Europe of Anti-Semitism and future prospects for Europe’s Jewish communities will be debated at a conference hosted by EP President Martin Schulz and First Vice-President Antonio Tajani in Parliament’s premises on Tuesday afternoon. Storbritanniens premierminister Theresa May tog imod Parlamentets formand Martin Schulz.  

Når Brexit-forhandlingerne begynder, vil Europa-Parlamentet agere som en ansvarlig og aktiv forhandlingspartner, understregede Martin Schulz, da han mødte Storbritanniens premierminister Theresa May. Members of the Euro-Latin American parliamentary Assembly “expect and hope” that the “historic” peace agreement between the Government of Colombia and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) will be approved in the referendum to be held on 2 October. Once the deal is approved and the definitive and irreversible laying down of weapons is confirmed, they add, the FARC should be removed from the EU’s list of terrorist organisations.
