Italian Presidency priorities discussed by EP committees

The priorities of the Italian Council Presidency were outlined to the various parliamentary committees by Italian ministers on 2, 3 and 22 September, following a first series of meetings held on 22 and 23 July. (Read more: Italian Presidency priorities discussed by EP committees )

 
 

Parliament should not sign off spending by the European Council and the Council of Ministers for 2012, due to their repeated failure to co-operate with its efforts to check the accounts, the Budgetary Control Committee unanimously advised on Tuesday. But it should clear spending by the Riga-based Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC), whose budget management, procurement and recruitment shortcomings, highlighted in April 2014, have now been corrected, it adds. MEPs to discuss situation in Gaza with UNRWA director

The situation in Gaza following the August ceasefire agreement, the need to ensure access for humanitarian workers to the strip, its reconstruction and the need for intra-Palestinian reconciliation are expected to top a Foreign Affairs Committee debate with Robert Turner, Director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) operations in Gaza on Tuesday. Economic recovery is slowing, but banks’ confidence in SMEs is up, says Draghi

Economic recovery is losing momentum; European Central Bank President Mario Draghi told the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee on Monday, citing slowing growth in the second quarter and less than encouraging economic indicators in the summer. "The weak credit curb, high unemployment, political and geopolitical tensions could work against the necessary confidence the ECB is trying to build", he explained. Nominees for Sakharov Prize 2014 announced

Seven nominees for the European Parliament’s 2014 Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought, chosen by political groups and groups of MEPs, will be presented at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Development committees and the Human Rights Subcommittee on 23 September, at 16:15. The candidate commissioners as presented by incoming Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, will be scrutinised by the European Parliament committees from 29 September to 7 October. Members will evaluate candidates' suitability before the full house votes on the proposed Commission. Mordene på journalisterne James Foley og Steven Sotloff samt nødhjælpsarbejderen James Haines udført af Islamisk Stat (IS) fordømmes stærkt af Europa-Parlamentet i en resolution vedtaget torsdag. EU må tage alle midler i brug for at hjælpe de nationale og lokale irakiske myndigheder med at bekæmpe IS, herunder også militær indsats, siger MEP'erne. De opfordrer indtrængende det internationale samfund til at afskære IS' ressourcer og opfordrer til, at der findes en politisk løsning på konflikten. Europa-Parlamentet glæder sig over fremskridtene i retning af fred i Ukraine og over den nyligt ratificerede associeringsaftale mellem EU og Ukraine, men er bekymret over Ruslands hensigter i den uerklærede "hybrid krig" mod Ukraine. I en resolution vedtaget torsdag opfordrer Parlamentet på det kraftigste EU til at stå fast over for Rusland og øge støtten til landmænd, der bliver ramt af det russiske importforbud. Libya: EU must step up efforts to support stability and democracy, MEPs say

The EU must step up its involvement in supporting Libya’s stability and transition to democracy, said the European Parliament in a vote on Thursday. MEPs condemned the growing use of violence there, especially against civilians, and called for a ceasefire between the fighting factions. They also said humanitarian assistance, the safety of civilians and the security of humanitarian personnel must be ensured by all parties in the conflict. Human rights: Azerbaijan; the case of Mbonimpa in Burundi; Bangladesh
