        Third in a series of the hearings about "impact of Brexit on transport', this hearing  organised by the Committee on Transport and Tourism will focus on the maritime sector, including shipping companies and ports. As the negotiations between the UK and the EU enter their second, sector-specific stage, the Members will question their guests about their concerns, projections and wishes concerning the negotiations and legal and practical consequences of the UK leaving the EU.

        The future of the Schengen area: internal management and governance, information systems and territorial scope

        The Civil Liberties Committee will hold a public hearing on 20 February 2018  from 15.00-18.30 to take stock of the situation regarding the Schengen area. The hearing is divided into three panels: overview of the latest and expected developments, assessment of the functioning of the Schengen area and how to move forward. The following issues will be discussed: the current obstacles for the Schengen area and how to enlarge it to Bulgaria and Romania; controls at internal borders; is the external border of Schengen adequately controlled?


        The aim of the hearing is  to facilitate a political debate of the initiatives undertaken by the EU since the migration crisis started and further assess the progress made with a view for the future.

        This hearing is organised in light of the current work on the recent proposal to amend Directive 2009/73/EC on common rules for the internal market in natural gas. The focus will be on the proposed extension of the Directive's provision to gas pipelines to and from third countries as well as the possible impact on the EU Internal Gas Market and the EU's security of gas supply.
