Following a debt swap agreement between Greece and private investors, European Parliament President Martin Schulz made the following statement:

EP-President Martin Schulz will speak at the Greek Parliament in Athens today at 18.00h CET (19.00h local time). His speech will be followed by a debate with Greek MPs.

EP Vice-President Othmar Karas (EPP, Austria) called at the weekend for parliaments to be involved in global decision-making and strengthening the global financial system. At a meeting of parliamentary speakers of the Group of Twenty countries in Riyadh, he said the G20 is dominated by governments but bringing parliamentarians into the mix can add a new dimension. Parliaments must have their say in the run-up to the G20 Summit in June, which will focus on the international financial system.

A delegation of 11 MEPs will meet Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Wednesday 29 February in Yangon in Burma/Myanmar. This is the first time Ms Suu Kyi will receive an official delegation from the European Parliament.

After the election of a President, Vice-Presidents and Questors of the European Parliament in Strasbourg last week, parliamentary committees convened this week in Brussels to elect chairpersons and their deputies for next two and a half years until the end of the legislature.

A date should be set for the start of accession talks with the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and the five EU Member States that have yet to recognise Kosovo's independence should now do so, said the Foreign Affairs Committee in two separate resolutions voted on Tuesday. Both resolutions are to be put to a plenary vote in March.

Today's election of Martin Schulz (S&D, DE) as President of the European Parliament resulted in the final change to the composition of the Conference of Presidents, the body that brings together Parliament's president and political group leaders. Hannes Swoboda (S&D, AT) replaces Mr Schulz as chair of the Socialists and Democrats Group today, following the election or re-election of the other group leaders.
