EP Vice-President Othmar Karas (EPP, Austria) called at the weekend for parliaments to be involved in global decision-making and strengthening the global financial system. At a meeting of parliamentary speakers of the Group of Twenty countries in Riyadh, he said the G20 is dominated by governments but bringing parliamentarians into the mix can add a new dimension. Today's election of Martin Schulz (S&D, DE) as President of the European Parliament resulted in the final change to the composition of the Conference of Presidents, the body that brings together Parliament's president and political group leaders. Hannes Swoboda (S&D, AT) replaces Mr Schulz as chair of the Socialists and Democrats Group today, following the election or re-election of the other group leaders.
